WF_Blanket_DriveIn Afghanistan, severe winter weather is excruciating for families living in poverty. Men, women and children in Afghanistan and especially in the surrounding areas of Mazar-e-Sharif, are affected by frostbite. Mazar-e-Sharif is the fourth largest city in Afghanistan.

The climate in Mazar-e-Sharif is very hot during the summer with daily temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius in June and July. The winters are cold with temperatures falling below freezing. The locals, in particular the elderly do not have heat in their homes or adequate blankets to keep warm. As a result, they are exposed to severe cold temperatures for long periods of time and inevitably suffer from frostbite and gangrene. Sadly, many have lost their fingers.

qurbani1432

‘It is not their flesh or their blood that reaches God. Rather, it is your God-wariness that reaches Him…’ (Holy Qur’an 22:37)

Eid al-Hajj is celebrated by Muslims around the world in commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail for Allah (SWT). The spiritual implication of the Qurbani (sacrifice by way of slaughtering an animal in the way of God) is the giving away of worldly possessions in the way of Allah (SWT), including one’s own life, property and children. This sacrifice is a symbol of our absolute love and commitment to our Creator.

IMG00111-20110129-1730As I entered the busy station I weaved my way through the shoppers, the tourists, the commuters, and head towards the ticket barriers.

And then I heard it. It was like a soft cry in the wind at first, then followed by the unmistakable sound of coins shaking in a bucket. "Any spare change" they cried. "Help the victims of the Pakistan floods".

This was the second London underground tube collection organised by Stanmore Jaffery’s in as many months, and their biggest yet.
