Education

Given the chance to change one thing about the COEJ trip to Malvern, it would without a doubt be to extend the duration of the trip. Not only was the week extremely productive with regards to revision, but it was also a massive wake up call. The high levels of teaching reminded me of the level of competition I am facing. Organisation of logistics was second to none; with efficient timetabling and a full schedule, it ensured that no time was wasted. The mentors provided instant help, and as a student that is the best resource that I could wish for. Instead of me having to search for the answers from what seems to be a mountain of textbooks, I could ask the mentors who would ensure that any problems I had were resolved very quickly. Despite having spent an entire day working, I still managed to enjoy my time at Malvern. I was able to meet new people who were in the same position as me. The success stories of the mentors provided the much needed motivation, and proved to be a kick-start for many including myself. The effort put towards the food is definitely worthy of praise, the courses prepared tried to imitate my mothers cooking; although not having hit any new boundaries, it did make the stay at Malvern comforting. These are all reasons why I wish the trip was longer; It was the perfect combination of revision and laughter leaving us great memories that we shall cherish for years to come.

Before leaving for the CoEJ PPP revision, I must admit I was feeling very nervous. The idea of studying for more than 12 hours per day for 5 days was absolutely daunting. On top of that I didn’t know who I was going to share my room with, what the food was like, who were my mentors and most importantly who were my teachers. This feeling was mutual for majority of the students. When the day came for us to leave the comfort of our homes and dedicate ourselves to solid studying, the nervous feeling was growing even more. However, during the time we were waiting for the coach to come, I met all the female students and mentors. It was just a matter of time that I got to know them very well, which helped in preventing homesick and feel positive throughout the stay. The teachers were very helpful in telling me how to improve my skills and how to apply my knowledge in answering exam questions. I felt the surgery sessions were very useful as I had the advantage to approach any of the teachers if any help was needed in my subjects. Due to the fact I had a lot of free time, I used to spend it in writing up notes and the mentors who were looking over us provided me with a lot of help when I got stuck on a particular topic. The ethos was successfully maintained thanks to the mentors. The mentors and admin helped me a lot regarding personal issues and making me feel at home. It is because of them that we were united through Dua nights, playing games and talking in a group at the end of every night. It was their kindness that influenced me to become a mentor next year. The accommodation was great and what I liked the most was randomly picking groups of girls to share a room. The food was great and we were well fed at every course of the day. In conclusion, the revision week was a great learning experience for me as I got a lot of work done, I made a lot of new friends and it has made me want to be a mentor and help students who are planning on coming in the future years. I would also recommend this course to all my friends and family.

- A Level Student, PPP 2010

During the COEJ past paper revision course, I was able to gain knowledge, have fun and make new friends. The whole experience enabled me to become more confident in exams by preparing me with ideal answers for the hardest possible questions. As a current GCSE student myself, I have learnt about the significance of doing past papers and how practise makes perfect. The revision camp was the perfect thing which provided me with the crucial exam techniques that I needed in order to be successful. Through this course I feel that my grades have been raised, my understanding has increased, but of course, none of this would have been possible, if it wasn’t for the amazing teachers we had. However, I think the lessons would have reached its full potential, if the teachers went over more revision topics, rather than setting past papers so early in the week. I think the most beneficial time for me, was in surgery sessions which allowed me to go individually to any teachers and discuss anything that I didn’t quite understand. Despite the long hours of working, time was set aside for sport, which allowed us all to bond together in team games such as basketball, football, volleyball and even individual sports like yoga, which allowed us to unwind. The week went so fast and as a group, we became like a family. We looked after each other when any one was ill, and helped each other when anyone was in need of aid. Our mentors motivated us to study by advising us for future career plans and by creating an enjoyable study environment. As a result, I have personally become so close to our mentors who have made this trip unforgettable for me.

Having attended the CoEJ past paper revision course for the past two years, not only have I found it informative and well organised, I feel that it has built the foundations of my studies for my upcoming exams. Being in year 11, I have learnt the importance of past papers, especially the correct way of answering the hardest of questions with a perfect answer. This was shown by my raising grades in all the subjects that CoEJ provided. Personally I feel my achievement would not have been possible without the help of the extremely friendly and welcoming teachers.  This was most beneficial to me during surgery time, where there was study tables with a teacher situated at each one, I felt that I could approach the teachers to receive aid of complex questions of which I did not understand. Even though the course was education based, I felt that there was a perfect balance between religion, education and socialising with regular Jamaat Namaaz and daily sports sessions in the well-designed timetable. Initially I found the days long and tiring, however as I evolved to my friendly atmosphere, days zoomed by. Outside of the timetable we had a common room in which we could all relax and unwind, this was made possible by the pool table and also the great atmosphere caused by each other. Every day students had the opportunity to play one and a half hours of sport, the sport varied every day which made each day more interesting and something to look forward to, the were sports like badminton, football, cricket, basketball and pool. Even theTeachers joint in.  Overall, I enjoyed the experience, made some good friends and had a good laugh and would definitely be attending next year.

- GCSE Student, PPP 2010

"I feel that going to the PPP Revision Course was a good experience as the timetable was laid out well. It may have been a little demanding with the early hours and late nights, however it was extremely helpful as there was a routine to stick to which helps when revising. Overall, it was a good experience and I would love to go again for A Levels."

- GCSE Student, PPP 2009

"The PPP Course is an amazing experience; an unregrettable chance to have the perfect get-away from the pressures at home and work with a more focus on you. This is a great opportunity to learn a lot. Also you can meet a lot of new people from other mosques! Attending the course made my GCSE’s easier for me to handle and took the stress off me, i had got a lot of revision tips that could also help me revise for other subjects. Because i was one of the youngest it helped having the 6th form students there is well because they could help you with some of the stuff because they would have done it just under one year ago."

- GCSE Student, PPP 2009

"PPP was most definitely a kick start to my revision. It showed me how to divide up my revision each day, what best ways to revise were, and also it made me realise how much time I wasted elsewhere. The statement “It’s never too late to revise” -is true! PPP had excellent tutors and welcoming mentors; the atmosphere was both studious and serene. It’s a course that allows you to break off from the world and concentrate solely on yourself and studies. From this experience I came out with acceptable grades and great friends; and would recommend this course to all of you."

- A Level Student, PPP 2009

"Attending the CoEJ Past Paper Practice Revision Course is not just about learning the whole day, it is the perfect balance between a learning and a fun environment whilst still being in an Islamic atmosphere."
